Rome, 3 June 2009 - On implementation of Decree Law 231/2007 regarding enforcement of money laundering and the international terrorism financing, the Financing Information Unit (UIF) at the Bank of Italy and the Notary National Council signed Today in Rome the Understanding Memorandum which governs the information electronically exchange of suspicious transactions reports in an appropriate manner to ensure the notary reporting anonymity.
As known, by the the Minister of Economy decree dated 27 February 2009 (OJ n.77 of 2/4/2009), in consultation with the Minister of Justice, has identified the Notary National Council as professional entity to receive suspicious transaction reports sent by notaries. This is in accordance with Art. 43 of Legislative Decree No 231/2007, which allows traders to submit reports to UIF using the explicitly enabled professional filter.
The system will come into operation on 1 July 2009. The Notary National Council is the first Italian professional association to take over the role and responsibility of intervening authorities in matters of money laundering; in Europe similar function is performed by the Spanish Notary General (Consejo General del Notariado de España).

The protocol signed today lays down rules that CNN is expected to take to:
- Forward to UIF the full text of the alert, without the indication of the reporting Notary name;
- Preserve the acts and documents setting out the identity of the reporters notaries and ensuring the confidentiality;
- Ensure the acquisition and onward transmission to the reporting notaries of UIFs deepening requests.
